Pickering may have been named by the British after its Pickering, North Yorkshire, but they were not the first inhabitants of this area. Going as far back as the 15th Century (proof of earlier civilizations through archaeological remnants found at the Draper Site) confirms that this area was settled by the Aboriginal Wyandot people. The combination of Pickering & Ajax transit is the Ajax-Pickering Transit Authority or Triplinx, but in 2006, Durham Region Transit assumed operations of the entirety of Durham Region (all buses). Going in an east/west direction, the Pickering GO station provides public rail transit.
