Pickering may have been named by the British after its Pickering, North Yorkshire, but they were not the first inhabitants of this area. Going as far back as the 15th Century (proof of earlier civilizations through archaeological remnants found at the Draper Site) confirms that this area was settled by the Aboriginal Wyandot people. The French popped up in the area of Pickering in the early 17th Century and the latter part of the 17th Century is when the British colonials move in and named it Pickering. Pickering is directly east of Toronto within the Durham Region, with Whitby & Ajax to the east and Markham to the west. Going in an east/west direction, the Pickering GO station provides public rail transit.
