West Shore Real Estate
Pickering may have been named by the British after its Pickering, North Yorkshire, but they were not the first inhabitants of this area. Going as far back as the 15th Century (proof of earlier civilizations through archaeological remnants found at the Draper Site) confirms that this area was settled by the Aboriginal Wyandot people. The French popped up in the area of Pickering in the early 17th Century and the latter part of the 17th Century is when the British colonials move in and named it Pickering. Pickering is directly east of Toronto within the Durham Region, with Whitby & Ajax to the east and Markham to the west. Throughout the years, many people of different cultures moved into the area and commuted to Toronto for work purposes. The southern part of Pickering is mostly suburban (Frenchman’s Bay was the original site where residential housing developments began to flourish) and northern Pickering is rural in nature which is where most of the farming in Pickering takes place (Whitevale, Claremont and Brougham). The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and its immediate surrounding area is the only industrialized area in Pickering, with neighbouring companies like Purdue Pharma, Eco-Tec Inc., Hubbell Canada, Yorkville Sound and PSB Speakers Lenbrook.
Transportation in and out of Pickering became a joint venture with neighbouring Ajax to expand the amount of traffic that seemed to quadruple overnight. The combination of Pickering & Ajax transit is the Ajax-Pickering Transit Authority or Triplinx, but in 2006, Durham Region Transit assumed operations of the entirety of Durham Region (all buses). Going in an east/west direction, the Pickering GO station provides public rail transit. Regional roads run north and south which includes Highway 401 that can be picked up in the southern area of Pickering and Highway 407 ETR can be picked up in the mid-north area of Pickering.
Pickering has been the focal point for many film industry movies and made-for-TV shows and it is no wonder why, the waterfront, Frenchman’s Bay and Nautical Village are just a handful of the reasons why. Pickering has a special beauty that is unique to its city and over the years, many of its residents have taken extra measures to ensure the city stays within the realm of gorgeous. Real estate for sale in Pickering is just as unique as the city itself. With a varied selection of semi-detached, detached, condos, townhouses and commercial property, there really is no time like the present for residential investors/home buyers to come into Pickering and set up some viewings! Browsing real estate for sale in a new area is half the fun, the other half is unexpectedly finding the perfect home! Large sized lots, options for square footage and layout, there really is something for every person’s real estate palette when it comes to property for sale in Pickering. Young or old, Pickering offers a lovely variety of things to see, things to do and many farm-fresh things to taste. Schools are plentiful in Pickering, from the 17 elementary schools, 2 secondary schools, 8 Catholic elementary schools & 1 secondary Catholic school and several private schools for both elementary & secondary aged children. Close at hand, the Durham College/Centennial College Learning Centre is just one of the post secondary education colleges in Pickering, the University of Toronto, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and York University are still close enough to make Pickering a very appealing place to live.
Investing in Pickering for business is a win-win situation, commercial property and availability of land and space is a ‘get in now’ situation. Businesses have accessibility to a diverse and stable economy, a skilled & educated labour force, higher quality of life, access to all major markets, location preference, costs that are business competitive and the draw of residents/buyers that prefer a clean, family-oriented and safe community. Pickering is an environmentally aware city with residents and business owners that go to great measures to keep their communities clean and healthy for the future. Such measures include (but are not limited to): Dog Waste Diversion, Catch Basin Cleaning Program, Community Cleanup Initiatives, Adopt A Park, Safer Streets Strategy, Eyes on the Street, etc.
The Great Lakes Nautical Village and Pickering’s marinas (Frenchman’s Bay marina, Swans marina & Wharf Street marina) offer a different twist for residents that are sailing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, or power boat enthusiasts. The Waterfront Trail is hugely popular with residents who love to walk, jog or take a romantic stroll at sunset. Millennium Square offers concerts, the beach offers volleyball nets, a splash pad for the kids and a park to exhaust some summertime energy. Pickering is also home to 85 parks (Rouge National Urban Park is great!), 3 conservation areas (Altona Forest, Greenwood Conservation Area & Petticoat Creek), creeks, wooded valley lands and many trails and sports fields.
For something a little different, residents can enjoy the Pickering Centre Farmer’s Market, the Pickering Museum Village, or something more fitness related, stop by the Pickering Recreation Complex.
